People frequently ask me for software recommendations. The following are
some of the more useful items that I have found.
Protect
your computer from viruses with McAfee
Anti-Virus software. A FREE and fully functional evaluation version is
available from their web site. I recommend the VirusScan program (which
does not expire) instead of the Clinic program which is only good for a short
time and requires a subscription. If you like your computer, you'll
probably get a subscription anyway.
WinZip's
web site provides free evaluation copies of their zipping programs. You
can use their program for opening *.ZIP files and you can use it to create
files. This is very useful if you are trying to squeeze files on a floppy
disk or emailing a large number of files to a friend. Click to download
from www.winzip.com
Download
the most recent version of Microsoft
Windows Media Player for viewing, playing, and organizing videos, sounds,
and music files. It can also play your Real Audio files.
June.com
offers FREE internet access. You also get a free email account.
Why pay for internet access if you can get it for free? Sign up and
download their free software.
www.netzero.net is another FREE internet
company. If you want cheap internet service with email, this is it.
Visit their website and download the software. The catch is that you have
to put up with advertisement banners (what do
you expect for nothing).
Adobe
Acrobat Reader is the program that you need to open files in Portable Document
Format (files ending in PDF). I recommend downloading Acrobat Reader and
the "plug-in" for your web browser.
AlphaPage
Pro from InfoRad (Information Radio Technologies) is a great alphanumeric paging
program. It can be used with common pagers/beepers or with alphanumeric
capable cellular/PCS telephones. This is the program currently in use by
the Chelsea Police Department. Click here to
download a single user demo version.
Attention Chelsea Police Employees: Email me at
BobGriffin@BobGriffin.net and I will send you the complete paging database for use with this
software. This is the same software we currently use at Police
Headquarters. |
